My experience with this project has been great. It was fun when we were told to close our eyes and have a vision of the future in 2015 if this goal were solved. I visioned that our Earth was a better place. Poeople and animals had stopped dying from water and air pollution. Anotherthing was that poeple started recycling. It was also fun when we pretended to be in 2015 at Paris and that I was a proffesional doctor. I have been working on the dream project for about 2 months now. I have noticed how much the world needs change and how much we need to help it. So, i now know that the world isn't going to change on its own, we have to do something to change it. " The world needs dreamers , the world needs workers , but the world needs dreamers who work."As Albert Einstein also said," A dream is not a dream unless someone dreams with you." I have learned so much about things i never knew about. There are many people taht are dying from pollution and so are animals. We are fundraising to help them. We are also donating money to Kiva. I didn't know about many things that were happening in this world, i never even knew about the MDGs. This project has changed my life because now i see that people in other places and coutries do not have the same privledges and money etc. that we have. I am very grateful to what I have now that i know about these goals.

The most AMAZING Lady!

Today I met the most amazing lady. Her name is Penpa Negi. She is Tibetan and lives in India. The photo to the left is one of her and her mother. She and her brother, Lama Tenzin, a Tibetan monk, rescue children from the boarder of the Himalayas/Nepal/Tibet and bring them to safety. Not only do they save the lives of these children that would other wise live in great poverty (or worse, be picked up by the Maoist terrorists), but they give them an education and the chance to live a life of dignity and purpose.

Penpa, Lama Tenzin, along with a group of eleven children recently took a 30 day journey through the Himalayas to reunite with the children with their parents after seven years of separation...but while they were there, they rescued a baby that was left to die because she was born with a cleft pallat. This baby, Tendral Metok (Harmony Flower) has now received a surgery to fix her cleft pallet from Operation SMILE in Atlanta.

I am so impressed and inspired...I wish you all could meet her...maybe the Nimitz students will interview her for their radio show!!!

Working Toward a Solution in Bolivia

I had the honor today of getting to share a bit with the two classes at Nimitz Middle School about my recent trip to Bolivia and Peru, where two friends of mine are working with an organization called "Sustainable Bolivia." Through this organization and the 22 grassroots organizations it supports, they are helping Bolivia to work toward achieving the United Nations Millenium Development Goals in this part of the world.

In Bolivia, 65% of people live below the poverty line. Many people have trouble accessing clean water and other fundamental facilities, such as safe roads, schools and hospitals, due to a poor infrastructure in this area.

In Bolivia and Peru, specifically in rural areas, many children don't attend school because it is too far away or too expensive. If one child does get to go school, it is usually the boy because the girl is just going to grow up and have babies, so why does she need an education? At least, this is the opinion of many people there.

Lots of people within countries like Bolivia are working hard, though, through various organizations to make life better for society. In Bolivia, both foreign and local people are involved with a number of organizations doing all sorts of things, from helping disabled adults and children who have special needs, to installing ecological kitchens in rural villages. Some organizations travel to local villages to talk to women and children about human rights, food safety, health, and to help the women look for jobs. Other people, who have experience in economics and business, go to rural villages to help people establish their own small businesses. Why is this important? Because it's sustainable. This means that once these people have started their own businesses, they will be able to keep supporting themselves. Some of the other organizations work with healthcare centers, some of these healthcare centers specialize in helping pregnant women and children under five, and some of them help everyone. Other groups work with orphanages, education in local schools, and even promoting sustainable environmental practices in farming!

I definitely saw a lot on my trip, and it opened my eyes to alot of the issues people face in this part of the world, as well as a lot of the great work being done for people to help each other.

Before the year comes to an end, I want to tha nk you so much for raising your voice and adding your name to UNIFEM’s Say NO to Violence against Women campaign. The results have been overwhelming! On 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, it was my privilege to present 5,066,549 signatures to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York. (You can still watch the event on webcast at: http://www.unifem.org/campaigns/vaw/multimedia.php.)

Together, we have demonstrated that there is indeed a global movement of people determined to put an end to violence against women. What’s more, decision makers at the highest levels have joined us to publicly commit to make ending violence against women a top priority. Heads of State and Ministers representing 64 governments have signed on. This strong show of political will is incredibly important for there to be decisive action. Dream Project

My experience in the project is exciting I really enjoyed working

with most of my partners . I have goal #8 to Develop Global Partnership

for Development . My partners and I thought if there is less wars the Earth

would be a safer place . If there was less gangs people would be safer because of

less murders . When you hurt other people thats not cool , I mean there inocent

people just trying to live peacfully . I think we should have less wars so less deaths .

I was also proud of my classmates for creating their own skit. Even though I play a small part in the dream Project I feel proud of myself for participating. Now I think wars fights and gangs should stop.If these things dont stop people could lose their life for nothing. I felt very confident while doing the skits yesterday. I would like to thank Ms. Kelly for telling me and informing me to the U.N melledium goals. The goal that I'm working on is goal #6 to combat Hiv/aids malaria and other diseases. I learned a lot by studding this goal like that a lot of people die mostly every day by lots of deadly diseases. Al tho some have stopped and died and there have been some cures like vaczines but still some keep growing and becoming more deadlier.

Before I didn't even know that the millennium goals existed until Kelly came along to teach them to us. Another thing that I didn't was that many people in developing countries had way less than what we had. We are destroying and harming natural resources that other people don't have. My feelings are that I feel good because i'm helping people. I never knew what the Millenium Goals were until Kelly told us about it. It opened up my eyes because I didn't know that there was any Millenium Goals. Also I didn't know that there was so many problems around the world. I am in Goal #5- Improving Maternal When I got this oppurtunity to be able to be part of the Dream Project was like winning an award. When I was introduced I never knew that the world was this bad. Before I was introduced to these UN Millennium Goals, I thought that the world was in a good shape. But when I was introduced, I thought the world was falling apart. I feel so happy to be able to participate in this project. I never thought that so many people around the world littered and that some people drink dirty water every single day. I never knew about these goals until Kelly came in and taught me about this. I thank Kelly, Amanda, and Melinda for bringing this project to our art class. my goal is to ensure enviromental sustaisnability which is goal #7. I feel sad for all those people who don't have clean water and for the many sea animals who die because of dirty waters. I really never thought that so many sea animals died. Before i never new about the 7 mollleniom goals. but now that kelly had introuced them to me i feel happy about this because this is one of the firt times i've got to help some one i don't know i feel good of helping this persons because they are also people so they and they are just like us they also deserve water and all the things we have. what i also feel to is that i feel sad because waist and destroy so much and we don't even now what we are causing so me people do know what there causing but they don't even care. My goal is goal # 7 ensure enviormental sustainability and i have to make sure we stop causing polution that affects the earth because the earth is our home and if we don't take care of it who will? I first want to thank the crew of the draem project because they were the one's who intoduuced the dream project to me if they would have not introduced it to me a would have still been harming the earth instead of taking care of it.

Whe I presented I was nervous. But once I actually presented I was just having fun. I think so far the dream project has taught me more than my years of school. I feel that I should really try to donate everything I can to organizations that are working on this problem. Before i didn't know about the problems people faced. As amatter of fact I didn't even know about the United Nations Millenium Goals. The dream project was here on my first day of school. I am glad I was able to work on the dream project. Well I felt alot of things because of the The Dream Project,and one of them is that i got so inspired that me and my group are willing to waste our money to save these poor women from dying a horrible death,me and my group are making a bake sale to raise up money to buid some close hospital,doctors,or give them medicare. I am so mad because all these women are dying,but im also happy because im there to help them.

I feel very informed and proud about my goal which is goal #5. The reason I feel informed is because I learned new things that I didn't know before about my goal. One thing I learned is that not only mothers have died when they give birth, but also children that don't have healthcare. I also feel proud of my goal because I'm finally going to achieve something that's important and that really takes my attention. I am very proud of bieng introduced to the Dream Project by Kelly. My experience so far of the Dream Project is amazing. The Dream Project has changed my mind in a way that I can help the world and the people that live in it. Emanuel's message to the LA students

Some of you already know about the young boy from Sudan that I met in Paris at the United Nations conference. His name is I Emmanuel, and he spoke at the UN conference about the value of education. He lives in a place where education is hard to come by and there are a great deal of challenges because of that.

I hope you will all learn and be inspired by Emmanuel as I have been.

He is very interested in getting to know the students in Los Angeles.

I asked him what message he has for the LA students and here's what he said:

"I would like to share with students in LA that education in our world now is the key to everything. Because the world is now like a small hut, closed and the key is education.
and the key is held by the the educated young people now. Shield because young people are right in every State...and Ideals live on in this new, young President of the USA. This evidence that young people strive for the development of education experience and awareness of others."

I am so grateful for Amanda Addison, Melinda Woolf, Ms. Demowa and Ms. Zembrano!

Amanda and Melinda went to Nimitz yesterday and worked with the kids...I was so blown away with the report I received from them...the theme of the day was reinterpreting the Millennium Development Goals in an affirmative way.

They came up with a way of framing the MDGs that were so empowering...really visionary...I will be posting what they wrote in one of my next posts.

The kids came up with a game show idea as a way of teaching and learning about the MDGs...as well as a play. Stay tuned...

The Challenge

Today is election day...and I would love to pose a challenge to you today and everyday (see below.)

In my experience (and I know there is scientific evidence to back this up) our thoughts effect reality...soooo instead of worrying about what might go wrong...why not channel your creative, manifesting energy into imagining/dreaming/visioning what you would like to see, feel, experience.

Here's the challenge:

Take 30 seconds right now. Close your eyes and imagine exactly what our country will feel like. It takes so many of us to make up all the world. If enough of us have it, we will have the then be able to have us all. We don't have to have the ones that we had when we let the Bush have us the ones imagine how good it will feel. So what you want to have for the futured. All of us need to put into the matrix what we want the world to be like.

Imagine successful diplomacy.

Imagine peace and restored prosperity.

Imagine the citizen groups, progressive populism, social justice, and the grassroots finding their voice.

Imagine windmills and clean cars and new kinds of suppressed technology.

Imagine the earth being healed and revitalized, with everyone being brothers.

Imagine being very proud of your country and its leaders. Imagine whatever it is that draws you to support change. Imagine what your life will look like.

Just 30 seconds. Do it several times a day. We can shift and change the vibration of this country with positive visions just like this.

See it...Feel it...breathe it...Pass it on. Let us...remember... all of the wonderful reasons we appreciate this reality and our part in helping to build it.

Kicking it off!

Last week kicked off the official beginning of the Dream Project '08-'09 school year. Last Monday I met fifty sixth graders at Nimitz Middle School in East Los Angeles with Miss Demowa and Ms. Zembrano's combined classes.

WOW! I was so impressed with the enthusiasm, participation, and level of awareness of these 6th graders! I asked the students, "Who knows what the United Nations is?" Half the hands in the room shot right up in the air. I called on one enthusiastic boy seated in the back row who answered, "The United Nations is where representatives from every country around the world meet to work out their differences and come up with solutions to make the world better."

I was flabbergasted...who are these kids? Were they prepped before I walked in? They couldn't have been...this was their first day of school!

We are doing something new this year that I've been looking forward to since we began...and that is bringing in mentors...students that previously went through the program to support the kids that are just getting started. Eigth graders, Karla, Mayra, Jacob, and Michael showed up to dazzle the 6th graders with their leadership skills. I couldn't have been more proud.

Then on the following day, we ventured over to Van Nuys to initiate day one of the Dream Project with Crossroads High School. There are definitely some bright stars in that group. There was a young man named Money (a nickname I'm sure) who shook my hand at the end of class and volunteered to be the point person for the class. He said that he has been DJ since the age of seven and will put a music track together so the Crossroads students can create a Millennium Development Goal rap song.

Thank you Rudy for being our fearless camera man, and thank you Amanda for being my wonderful assistant! (p.s. Amanda is going to West Africa through the Peace Corps in June and will be taking the Dream Project with her...she is an angel!)

I feel truly blessed to have such great support behind the scenes from our LA and Santa Fe based team--Dana and Steve!

Needless to say, I am very excited about what will take place this year...stay tuned!
