Together, we have demonstrated that there is indeed a global movement of people determined to put an end to violence against women. What’s more, decision makers at the highest levels have joined us to publicly commit to make ending violence against women a top priority. Heads of State and Ministers representing 64 governments have signed on. This strong show of political will is incredibly important for there to be decisive action. (See the government list at: http://www.unifem.org/campaigns/vaw/supporters_government.php.)
Now, we must capitalize on the momentum created. Say NO was designed to feed into the UN Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women that will run until 2015. To further support the UN Secretary-General’s efforts, we will continue to mobilize and expand the Say NO network. We invite everyone to join and stay involved by going to: www.saynotoviolence.org. My friends at UNIFEM will provide you with regular updates and let you know about new ways to participate. In turn, let us know about efforts underway where you are by sending them to: saynotoviolence@unifem.org.
Before we say farewell to 2008, I want to thank you again for carrying on the Say NO campaign’s message — you made its success possible. In 2009, I look forward to being in touch with more news on actions to make ending violence against women a reality.
Happy Holidays and a great start into the New Year!
